Meet on arrival and straight drive to Cochin (180 KMS / 04 HRS 30 MIN). Upon arrival check in at your hotel.

AM: Sightseeing tour of Cochin city- Cochin: visit to the Cochin Harbour terminus, Mattancheery Dutch palace, Jewish Synagogue, Jew town, fort Cochin area-st. Francis Church, Chinese fishing nets. Also at Ernakulam, the public gardens, colleges, high court building and Broadway shopping centre.

Kathakali (literally, story play), the spectacular classical dance drama of Kerala based on the guidelines laid by saga Bharatha’s Natya Sastra, the ancient treatise on dance and drama, is over 500 years old. Artists doing make up for Kathakali dance can also be seen as it take several hours to adorn the make up

Day 3      Cochin / Kettuvallam - (HOUSEBOAT) (B/L/D)

tour south india houseboatAfter breakfast drive to Kettuvallam (80 kms/2 hrs) and walk through Alleppey bazaars & check-in at Houseboat.

Kettuvallam (house boat), the old rice boats now converted for tourists to travel up to kottyam through the night.

Adapted and modernized from the traditional kettuvallam of kerala, the vambanad kettuvallam is an experience in itself.  Large and comfortable amenities you could ask for a sundeck where you can laze on wicker chairs as you watch the world go by. The vembanad kettuvallam comes complete with a full time chef to cook you the catch of the day or whatever else that might catch your fancy and attendant always at your beck and call.

tour south india houseboatYour houseboat carries you slowly down palm-hung waterways, past backwater settlements of thatched and tiled cottages, bright with crotons and hibiscus. You set your own pace: stopping where you like, resting when you like, indulging yourself with the freshest of foods bought from the farmers and fishermen on the banks of the backwaters. You are always within the reach of other people & yet no one can intrude into your lives if you don’t want them to.

When night falls, and the stars thrust silver spears into the dark waters, your houseboat ties up alongside and plugs into a shore supply for electricity.  You don’t need it when you are cruising in the cool, shaded, backwaters. You sleep reassured that your crew rests in the lounge.

Lunch and Dinner at houseboat.

After breakfast cruise to Alleppey by the rice boats and drive to Periyar.  On arrival check-in at hotel.

Enjoy the plantation tour and in the evening walk thru a mile long very neat and small shops bazaar selling all kind of spices and herbs. You shall see the best of spices and herbs, probably among the cheapest and one of the best in the world.  

AM: Naturalist walk at Periyar jungle with naturalist guide.

Later drive to Madurai (170 KMS – 5 HRS). On arrival check-in at hotel.

After Breakfast Sightseeing of Meenakshi Temple, Gandhi Memorial, Tirumalai Nayak Palace.

tour south india houseboatMeenakshi Temple: This is an exquisite example of temples built by the Pandyan rulers. There are as many as 11 majestic towers with the main entrance from the East. There are two shrines, One Dedicated to Sundreswarar and the other to his Consort Meenakshi. The Hall in front of the Sundareswarar Shrine is known as Kampathadi Mandapam. The different manifestations of Lord Shiva are depicted on the pillars of this hall.

Gandhi Museum, In the 300 Year Old Rani Mangammal Palace.  It Contains an Art Gallery, Memorabilia (Gandhi’s Dhoti When He Was Shot), Traces History of The Independence Struggle From 1800, And the ‘Quit India’ Movement.  Informative, Interesting And Well Lay Out.  Also Has A Khadi And Village Industries Section And One Of South Indian Handicrafts.

Thirumalai Nayak Palace: About 1.5 Km South-East Of The Meenakshi Temple, This Indo-Saracenic Palace Was Built In 1636 By The Ruler Whose Name It Bears.  Today, Only The Entrance Gate, Main Hall And Dance Hall Remain But These Are Well Worth Seeing.

tour south india houseboatRock Fort: The Rock Fort (83 metres high) dominates the city's landscape. One can have a panoramic view of the city and the river cauvery from the summit. A stiff climb of 434 steps cut into a tunnel through the rock leads to the Ganesha Temple. The rock also contains excavated cave temples of the Pallava era (7th century a.d.) midway up, there is Sri Thayumanaswami Temple, dedicated to Siva.

Srirangam: This is a picturesque island ringed by the river cauvery and its tributary Kollidam, 5 km north of Trichy. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple here is one of the largest Vaishnavite Temples in South India. With 21 magnificent towers, the temple is surrounded by seven walls which hold the city itself.

Continue drive to Tanjore. On arrival check-in at. hotel

tour south india houseboatVisit Tanjore (Thanjavur): Tanjore was the capital of chola empire from the 10th to 14th century a.d. built in 1003 AD by king Raja. This temple is considered the grandest and finest in India. The majestic tower of the temple rises 216 ft. high over the city. The temple is capped by a monolithic cupola formed by a single granite block weighing 80 tonnes. This enormous stone is said to have been positioned by moving it along an inclined plane which commenced in a village 6 km. away - a technique adopted by the pyramid-builders of ancient Egypt.

PM: Drive Tanjore/ Pondicherry (175 kms, 4 hrs) visiting Chidambram enroute..

Chidambaram: This famous pilgrim centre is known for its Nataraja (Siva as the Cosmic Dancer) Temple. The lord here is worshipped as Akasha Lingam. The temple's gopurams, carved with 108 classical postures of Nataraja and the thousand-pillared hall are worth seeing. Traditionally, Chidambaram has been a leading centre of Tamil scholarship.
Continue drive to Pondicherry.  On arrival check-in at hotel.

After breakfast sightseeing tour of Pondicherry including the world-famous Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

Pondicherry - Visit the world-famous Sri Aurobindo Ashram is situated here. The Auroville complex is the brainchild of "the mother". The late French woman devotee of Sri Aurobindo to whom the spiritual authority was passed on after the death of Sri Aurobindo.

After that Drive to Madras (162 kms/3 hrs) via Mahabalipuram.

Mahabalipuram: Also known as the Seven Pagodas, Mahabalipuram is a pleasant seaside Resort, 85 kms from Madras. Today the principal attraction of the place to the tourist lies in the wonderful monolithic monuments and stone sculptures of the ancient Pallava Dynasty of Kings who ruled much of the territory now known as Tamil Nadu, from the 16th century AD.. The important monuments to be seen are the Five Rathas, the bas-relief on huge rock popularly known as Arjuna's Penance, the Mahisasura Mandapam, the Krishna Mandapam and the shore Temple.

Continue drive to Madras. On arrival check in at hotel.

AM: Madras: visiting, the fort St. George and st. Mary’s church-built by the British east India Company in 1653 AD. A church within the fort was consecrated in 1680. The high court, built in the indo saracenic style. The san thome cathedral - st. Thomas the apostle is said to be buries here. Marina beach - one of the lovliest beaches in the world.

PM: Free for shopping or relax at hotel, later transfer to airport for your International flight to USA,
on Singapore Airlines flight SQ 529 leaving at 11.15pm. Check in is at 8.15pm.
